Who are we?
Briefly…we are 2 people who wanted a better housing option.
We had both lived in a collection of both old and modern houses. This was before we got together. We are a Thai-Brit couple, happily married since December 2015 and together for a number of years before that.
With the prices of land and building costs relatively cheap against the costs back in Europe, a self-build became a possibility.
With a background in construction, I had an idea of what should go where in any house build project but that did not stop me calling on local professionals – architects and engineers to assist.
I had already worked out that my quality of life could be a lot better in Asia – the money goes an awful lot further for a start. Building a house back home would require major capital, and that’s assuming the building regulations and planning permission hurdles could all be jumped!
No… I made a plan to retire to South-East Asia, and after looking at the modern styled houses being built in Vietnam and Thailand, I became determined to fulfil my dream of 35 years – design and build it myself.
Although my wife has not got a construction background, she is fearsome and determined when it comes to getting things done. This was a useful asset as she became the Project Manager while I was out of the country still working. Also, she is 100% for ‘us’, not for assisting Thais to get something from the foreigner.
When completed, the house will be around 500m2 – not small by any standards. A lot of work to get from nothing… to finished!
